This one’s for you, Obama family

NFS © Pam Van Londen Nov 1, 2008 NFS © Pam Van Londen Nov 1, 2008. 8×8 Oil on clayboard.

The Obama campaign has been encouraging the making of art works all year. What campaign has ever done that? We all need inspiring and Obama provides that to many of us.

In addition, the Different Strokes project is inspiring. Here is my assignment for the week.

This painting is a gift to the Obama family. If you’d like a print, please order online at ImageKind.

I’m not sure how this husky in Sante Fe can stay cool in the summer; perhaps this shady porch does the trick.

We happened upon her when there in 2006 and had to cuddle up for a minute. She hardly noticed Maya as she sat down. I suspect she had something more interesting in her sites…perhaps a small critter.

Reuel and his Datsun 240z

My brother, Reuel Mark, is president of the Z club in Portland.
He adores his 240z, here, so I had to paint them together.
He also loves his 280z, which I’ll work on later this year.

Need a car portrait? Write me and send a photo.

Merry Christmas, Reuel.

Different Strokes Alabama Cow

© Pam Van Londen 2008 Alabama Cow 8x8x1 in oil on clayboard SOLD © Pam Van Londen 2008 Alabama Cow 8x8x1 in oil on clayboard

This week’s Different Strokes assignment is Bessy the Cow, from Alabama. She’s my first cow and probably not my last now that I’ve tried it.

I typically don’t paint animals (except my dog; who seems to be in every photo) because I don’t see them as thought provoking.

But any self-respecting artist would realize that it’s our job to make the subject matter thought provoking. I know now I can paint a cow, so the remaining challenge is to make it interesting with something to say.

New Mexico’s Ghost Ranch

A few years ago when we traveled the USA, I had to stop in Georgia O’Keefe country. One stop is Ghost Ranch. Because we had a dog with us, we were not welcome to stay on the ranch, so spent little time there.

I did meet this ol’ hoss, who could have been O’Keefe’s; she was so old.

The simple composition and color scheme intrigued me. I’ve finally had time to work on it.
Other places nearby that were beautiful included Echo Amphitheater and Abiquiu Lake.

These two new works will be part of an exhibit at Bombs Away Restaurant in February 2009.

The rest of the Food on the Table series will be there too. Take another look at the rest:

These attentive parents were introducing their young one to the Oneonta Creek in the Columbia River Gorge on the Oregon side last August.

It was nearing the end of the day, so birds were feeding on the insects and the quaking leaves were leaving a dappled pattern on the ground.

I’ve probably said this before, but I love to paint water and enjoy watching figures emerge in the scene.

Waiting for the sun to set at Cannon Beach

This gal and her dog sat close to the fire with a camera for quite awhile waiting for the sun to set at Cannon Beach in August.

The gentle sounds of children playing, birds feeding, and the waves lapping plus the fire crackling were creating a peaceful atmosphere. The pinkening tinge of the sky cast a glow, too.

Dahlias and Hydrangeas

Denise seems to always have something blooming in her yard. And lucky are those who receive some for their birthdays!

I took many photos of these bright daliahs and hydrangeas and hope to paint a few more like this one in oil pastel.

This quick study in oil pastel on clayboard is a bit messy but tells me the subject can be rendered in the 8×8 format I love so much.

The next version will be with paint and will take much more time!

Maya and Claire surfing

Because the kids enjoyed being in the water so much during our vacation in August, I had a lot of time to paint and take hundreds of pictures.

The kids were freezing but obsessed with catching waves. I caught them shivering here along with a teal wave.

This painting is created with oil pastels. This new brand is almost creamy and not at all like a chalk or Crayola crayon. They work well on gessoboard and clayboard. And they are easy to paint with while on the road.

Did I say I love the beach?
Well here are some folks enjoying the beach at Taft, Oregon, south of Lincoln City.

It was August, so lots of people were on the beach and in the water despite of the rough and dramatic waves.

Birthday Roses

My dear friends treated me to lunch and gifts in August which provided a lot of great flower and portrait options to paint.

This bouquet of pink roses was so beautiful (thank you Hilary) that I had to paint them. I gave half to my host at the Santiam River… a dozen roses is quite a lot and I no longer own a large vase.

Be looking for some paintings of the other batch of flowers received that day.

Willamette River again

Sticking with my plan to paint only pictures with people in them has been a challenge. So I combed through my photos again to see who I could find.

Of course my daughter loves to have her picture taken so I found a good one of her piloting a boat with Rich Brainard on the Willamette River, Oregon.

We enjoyed that trip so much. I will have to arrange another one next year!

Cloud Gate and granddaughter

For week 5’s Different Strokes project, we are using the Cloud Gate “bean” sculpture in Chicago. I added a bit of fun with another granddaughter image since she’s on my mind all the time! She is the essence of cuteness.

I am not happy with clayboard for portraits; it is hard to blend even if I add walnut oil (all I have on hand).

Grandchildren are so much fun!

I just adore my granddaughter. Here she is about to slide at the playground. She loves it of course.

I’ve touched up this painting today…added more whites and darks. It’s for sale but not cheap…she’s my little pumpkin, after all.

Pond Lily 3

Pond lily’s are attractive subjects. This one had large pink blossoms, which I found hard to render with oil pastel.
I’m working on scraffito but have yet to find the right tool for clayboard. So this image will evolve eventually.

White Pumpkins ~ food on the table

Wednesday is Different Strokes day ~ my the weeks are passing quickly. Fall is here and so are the pumpkins. Karin Jurick introduced miniture, white pumpkins today as our weekly subject. This provided the opportunity to add another still life to my food on the table series.

These paintings are 12×12 on gallery edged canvas, painted in acrylic. They are striking all hanging together…the purple, blue, and red are straight out of the tube with little mixing, adding a bit of vibration to the eye’s reaction.

I’m taking requests for the next subject. As long as I can eat it, I’ll paint it. Tell me what you want to see using my contact form.

One of my daily painting goals is to paint more portraits of people being active. So if I continue working with water as I so love, then I must add humans.

These two girls are tubing in the Santiam River, one of our favorite places due to the colors, rock formations, and clear water.

Newspaper with Hope

Week 3 of the Different Stokes project allowed us daily painters to work on a portrait. I added an extra level by modifying the color and bench to leave a message.

The owner of this work, a new customer from Seattle, purchased it for a special relative who worked on the Obama campaign.

My son would like a copy, so I’ll either make a giclee or paint it again!

Lali, who has a French blog full of other artists’ work, has added my work to her blog.

Wading Oneonta in the slot canyon

I meant to paint when I arrived at the falls, but it was a bit chilly and very damp. So much for hauling the backpack there.

I drenched my phone on the way in and out, so had to by a new phone. Ugh…the thing dried within a week and still works!

So that I get all the “assignments” done, I backtracked and created “Jack” today.

Stay tuned for week 3 and see week 2, below.

So busy painting that I have little time to blog! We’ve spent time on the Santiam River, Columbia River, and Pacific Ocean this summer. Since we had great weather I was able to paint en plain air.

The waves were large and dramatic over the weekend; allowing the translucent green to show when a wave was breaking.

Taft is a charming community south of Lincoln City, Oregon. Everything you need is within walking distance (cookies, ice cream, whale watching, beach access, and lodging).

Oneonta Gorge and waterfall

Last year we hiked around the Columbia Gorge waterfalls but wanted to return to Oneonta to test our bravery and paint, of course.

To see the lower Oneonta falls, one must traverse the creek bed, climb two log jambs, and ford the waist-high pools. We returned without any major injuries and without a painting; it was just a bit too chilly to sit and paint.

So we returned to camp to paint. Last year I painted the Middle Oneonta Falls. Perhaps next year I’ll get the upper. If there are not three falls on this creek, please correct me!

Thank you Ann and Bob for allowing me to paint to my heart’s content on your beautiful Santiam River.

I painted 1 large canvas in acrylic and 5 small panels in oil.
These are all ready to purchase except the large panel. It will be getting more detail in the foreground.

The water reflects the dark blue-green of the trees at this spot, but because the water is so clean and clear, the multi-colored rock formations and pebbles show through and reflect a bit of orange.

This is contrasted with the bright green grasses sprouting up everywhere. It’s quite magical!

Hidden Blossoms, blurry water

© Pam Van Londen 2008 Pond with Hidden Blossoms 8x8x1 in oil on clayboard SOLD © Pam Van Londen 2008 Pond with Hidden Blossoms 8x8x1 in oil on clayboard

Continuing with my obsession with plants and water, I painted this study in oil on clayboard, which dries fast and allows flexibility that gessoboard does not provide (as far as putting paint on wet areas).

Just a bit of medium applied (smeared, really) to the watery areas allows the lily pads to have more contrast.

The tree blossoms are hidden outside the painting plain but are reflected in the water, adding a bit of abstractness.

After 47 years in Oregon, I finally got to float the Willamette River. Near Corvallis, this large river is calm and scenic; with no factories to mar the view and disturb the ospreys.

We stopped half way to hunt for agates and petrified wood…and we were successful!

I took about 200 photos and have begun to paint a few scenes.
