The favorite set of paintings completed this month are the salsa still life paintings.

I’ve sold 2 and have a few friends waiting to see what other compositions I come up with.

Later this week I’ll be adding cilentro and perhaps other plate colors.

Tea and satsumas

Still life paintings are new territory for me but since it’s too cold to paint outdoors, I’m getting lots of practice indoors. Our dining table is just large enough to accommodate me and my accessories but something a bit larger would allow others to sit at the table, too. (Santa, are you listening?)

I’m working on this still life, which I changed slightly during session 2.

I think I liked it better in session 1. Hmmm. What to do?

I bought eggplant, endive, leeks, tomatillos, garlic, and an onion to paint later this week, to help fill out my dining series.

Painting with felt

© Pam Van Londen 2007 felted wool on marino wool. Not for Sale.

For some reason, I wanted to start a new craft/hobby. Geez; I have enough projects. But, this one was quick and somewhat mindless and not too expensive.

I bought several shrunken sweaters second hand and will be felting them with landscapes, still life objects, or portraits.

What do you think of this one, titled, “Mary’s Peak?”

I might need another web site if I decide to get serious about them…something like i-felt.us (it’s kinda catchy ;-).

Here are two more:

Another local garden

© Pam Van Londen 2007 Campus Garden 1 acrylic on canvasboard on 8 x 8 x 1 canvas
A block from Lucy’s Garden is a small, well-cared-for plot behind a newly renovated office building just off campus. The aspen’s are fun to watch change colors in the fall.

Below them are the round little hedges, creating a story-book view. Thank you to the landscape company that keeps them looking so delightful.

Lucy’s Garden transplanted from the South

SOLD © Pam Van Londen 2007 Lucy's Garden 1 acrylic on canvasboard on 8 x 8 x 1 canvas

Each day I work on campus, I walk past Lucy’s Garden. She’s a big ole dog in a picket-fenced succulent garden with palm trees, cacti, and other interesting plants of the south.

Something is always blooming in the tiny area with varying shades of green, yellow, purple, and red calling to me as I pass. A few times I’ve remembered to take photos so I can paint it later.

This is my first of hopefully many from this enchanting garden.

Salsa still life

As part of my painting every day routine, I’ve created 3 square still life paintings in acrylic on canvasboard.

Each uses bright primary colors to describe the interesting shapes of bell and Jalapeno peppers, lemons, and limes on a solid blue plate with red table cloth.

They create a playful triptych when hung together. Purchase them separately or all together for just $30 each (black lacquered frames included).

Enjoy a cup of tea and apples, too.

These two paintings were done en plain air while sitting on Barney’s Bench at Otter Rock on the Beverly Beach site. A local resident has purchased the Right painting. This will provide impetus to paint it again!

I must say Otter Rock and Beverly Beach are our favorite Oregon Coast spots. We spend as much time there as possible. Surfer-watching, wendletrap hunting, and painting are our usual activities.

Columbia River Gorge’s Crown Point

© Pam Van Londen 2007 Columbia Gorge Crown Point 1 acrylic on canvasboard on 8 x 10 x 1 canvas SOLD © Pam Van Londen 2007 Columbia Gorge Crown Point 1 acrylic on canvasboard on 8 x 10 x 1 canvas

The Columbia River Gorge’s most famous landmark is Crown Point on the Oregon side.

The Vista House sits atop the bluff and at sunset many Portlanders drive out to see the pink haze reflected on the water and cliffs.

This daily painting is part of my new regiment to paint every day.

A sprinkling of painters were present at this year’s Harvest Music Festival at Greengable Gardens in Philomath, Oregon.

Two friends of mine sketched with pencil and watercolor while I sketched with acrylics. We found a shady spot on the patio where Gumbo was playing guitar and flute.

The tables at this fancy affair were set with fantastic flower arrangements. The sunflower, corn, black-eyed susan, and berry arrangement is represented in my sketch.

Last month I spent a weekend with friends at Beachside in Oregon. It’s a very long,
wide beach; the expanse of it is a bit intimidating.

I sat next to the cliff to stay out of the wind for the first two sketches and stood out on the sand at low tide for the larger work.

The simple views found at this beach don’t necessarily mean an easy composition from which to paint. I look forward to spending another weekend there next year to practice finding interesting angles to paint.

First grandchild in safe hands

© Pam Van Londen 2007 In Safe Hands 11x14 acrylic on canvasboardMy first grandchild was born this month and seems so pretty and peaceful, I just had to paint her portrait.

She’s pictured here in her daddy’s safe hands.

I painted alla prima; without drawing first, though I did use a photograph as reference. It was taken on her second day at the hospital.

Mary’s River again

A few weeks ago some friends of the family spent the day at Mary’s River behind Avery Park in Corvallis. I painted while the kids played. Since I was outdoors, I decided to use oil paints.

I used the same brush throughout this quick study; just to get the feel of the medium. It felt like painting with cake frosting rather than paint. I need a lot more practice.
