My favorite beach is again the subject of a painting…Otter Rock. This image is from the inside of Devil’s Punchbowl. You can see straight through the arch at low tide to the formation outside the bowl.

The rocks have orange lichen and catches of sunlight. The water is greener the closer it is to you.

Though there are clouds in the sky, we can still picnic! These corn, onions, and tomatoes, if real, could be used to make a lovely salad.

Hang the image on your wall instead, to remind you to have picnics, where memories are made. If picnics are not your thing, at least remember to eat fresh food (eat your veggies!).

  • Watermelon and other melons
  • Sushi
  • Cherries and grapes
  • Corn, tomatoes, and onions
  • Anything you request!

The easy access to various edges of the lake water provided excellent painting venues. You can walk just a short ways from camp at Sunset Cove to get above the water to view patterns, hear boats come in, or see the setting sun in all her glory.

The wheel-chair accessible jetty allows kids and grownups to get into the water without getting wet!

This quick water study was made with oil sticks, which are often all I travel with. I sure wanted my paint brush on this trip, however.

This new challenge from Different Strokes is to turn a medium key grayscale pastoral scene into a colorful landscape.

Pennsylvania is as pastoral as the Willamette Valley in Oregon, so I have had many hours contemplating technique for a subject such as this.

I started with a red under-painting laid down with a funny brush. Other colors were laid down down soon after. The red shows through in almost all areas, adding drama.

Madison Ave is busier in

The Different Strokes 3-week challenge was to paint one of my favorite cities: Madison Ave in New York City.

I have a broken thumb, which has not stopped me from painting, though I certainly have a freer stroke than I normally would. So Madison Ave looks a bit crazier than normal.

I used an underpainting of blue to begin this work and layered various shades of yellow and orange to get the taxi color.

This four-panel polyptych was created in the motor home while my daughter practiced. If you walk by the paintings, you’ll see them shimmer because they are made with iridescent oil sticks and a touch of oil pastel.

All four panels are for sale together and come framed in black lacquered wood. Each panel is signed. Hang them in any arrangement you like.

Due to the number of practices and rehearsals I must sit through, I had to find a way to continue painting away from home. Since my only car is still a motorhome, I can paint on location!

But instead of using thinner, oil, brushes, etc., I use oil sticks on small boards. This greatly reduces the potential for spillage and mess. And I can quickly stash it all away.

Diana Sculpture challenge

© Pam Van Londen 2008 Diana Sculpture 8x8x1 in oil on clayboard SOLD © Pam Van Londen 2008 Diana Sculpture 8x8x1 in oil on claybord

I broke the rules this week for the Different Strokes Challenge. I wasn’t interested in painting the entire sculpture; too much detail. I prefer a closer crop. The subject is of a marble sculpture of one of the goddess Diana’s companions, a nymph and her hound.

First I painted a transparent background with thinned oil paint, then used the brush to block in the lightest values of the sculpture. Then added in the darkest values. Then I worked the middle value. To add more depth, I went back to each value with thicker paint and hue variation. I chose not to pencil in the figure…just not in the mood!

If I remember that the subject is a set of light and dark planes, then I am not intimidated by the details and subject likeness to the point where I must painstakingly draw it first.

The weather report for Oregon’s spring break promised to be rainy. We got lucky and had 3 days of sun at the beach…yeah!

This quick oil painting of Haystack Rock at Cannon Beach captures the rain found at the end of our stay. I started with oil sticks, which are easy to work with when traveling and hiking. I finished up with a bit of traditional oil paint when I returned home.

When the term ends, I look forward to painting every day again. Due to the amount of scoring (and number of basketball games my daughter has lately), I am unable to paint more than a day or two per week.

I was able to squeeze in my bi-weekly assignment for Different Strokes today. I could spend more time with it, but the spontaneous look it has appeals to me.

Sunflowers and Poppies Commission

In anticipation of summer and dreaming of Provence, I have painted a commissioned work of sunflowers and poppies.

This work required a color scheme I often do not paint in, so I mixed the colors exactly before beginning. This method helped produced a work that is a bit different from my normal portrait or landscape. The warmer palette was a joy to paint with and seemed to keep my insides warm while working!

Delivering the painting and getting it hung in just the right spot was fun. It did indeed match the new table and wall colors. I am honored that it will hang next to children’s art.

Comment from the new owner:

“I have been enjoying one of Pam’s paintings hanging in my living room for a couple of years now. After giving my kitchen and dining nook a “makeover,” I decided I needed a piece of art to finish it off and bring in some color, and I had something very specific in mind. I took my ideas to Pam. She was a joy to work with, and took my thoughts about a theme and color palette and interpreted it with her own touch of whimsy to deliver a painting that is really just perfect for the light and the space. I am so happy with it!”

In preparation for a commission to be done of sunflowers and poppies, I’ve created a larger piece to see how I might handle the subject matter. What is it about flowers that I find so difficult? I supposed like all else in life, practice makes perfect.

Stay tuned for more and better renditions of sunflowers and poppies.

I’m watching a lot of girls basketball lately and marvel at how the girls can fly, dive, roll, jump, etc. They have no fear and take jabs with almost no tears.

How the new generation is evolved!

This piece will be hung in the Oregon State University’s Memorial Union later this month for a show, “She Flies with her Own Wings,” sponsored by the Women’s Center on campus.

The show runs January 30 to February 23. The public reception is February 4 from 4:00pm to 7:00pm.

Abstract and non-objective paintings are my greatest challenge. So when I’ve got leftover paint on the palette, I play to see what I can come up with.

My goal today was to contrast the green and orange so they cause that wonderful vibration known as simultaneous contrast (or chromostereopsis).

I love this effect in paintings and other art. It’s hard on the eyes when you see it in web sites, however.

As we approach the inauguration of our new President, many artists are painting political scenes and monuments. In late 2008, participants of the Different Strokes project painted the US Capitol. This week we’re painting the Jefferson Memorial.

This panel was painless to paint (I dreaded painting those straight lines) so now I’m ready to paint the rest of our nation’s monuments.

Perhaps one day I’ll get to travel the world and paint other country’s monuments.

Not only am I enjoying watching some great middle-school basketball, but I’m painting the player, too. The looseness with which I can allow myself to work is helping ease the stress of starting a new term of teaching.

I have forgotten that when I’m feeling tired, lazy, and depressed (because I’m tired and lazy), that painting will completely change my mindset and make me smile, have energy, and change my outlook on life. It is a great accomplishment to not only create something but to improve myself in the process.

Even though I’m closed up in the house (because I don’t like cold), I am painting in oils. If I go mad, you might blame it on the fumes (which I do love the smell of).

It’s been snowing on and off in Corvallis all week and now that my workload has been cut in half by working 15 hour days, I can paint again!

Here are two snow paintings on canvas. They come with a hard backing and need a frame.

The weekly challenge for the Different Strokes project is to paint a pair of boots—Karin Jurick’s boots.

She’s a fantastic artist and her garden boots are perhaps being neglected from painting instead of gardening.

I’ve sent them on a vacation to the Columbia River. Perhaps in Karin’s future is a trip here as well.

Instill peace with a painting of Buddha

Here’s another subject from the Different Strokes project. I didn’t want to wait the 2 weeks we’re allotted for this one, since I had a few hours free.

If you don’t have a windowsill, flowers, and a meditating buddha to provide a bit of peace, try a painting. The right painting in a location you can contemplate it can be as healing as any other method you’ve tried.

Here’s another still life for the Food on the Table series. I’m using my Sister-in-law’s dishes and peaches here, along with rose petals from her garden.

If you’d like a still life of your favorite dishes, let me know…I am ready to paint in your favorite color scheme for your dining room.

This piece was sold at the Lake Oswego Festival of the Arts in Jun 2013. It was showing in the Spoon Exhibit invitational exhibit.

Our weekend at Otter Rock was fantastic. We jump-roped on the sand, ate great food, drank homemade wine, knitted, made earrings, and painted, of course.

The sun was out and the waves were just right for about 50 surfers!

Like I’ve been doing lately while on location, I began the painting with oil sticks. This lessons my load going up and down stairs. I finished this one up at home with a bit of contrasting color and lots of white for the waves and sky.

Mary’s Peak in the Oregon Coast Range of small mountains continues to inspire me. The fall colors that surround her are bright against her cool blue shadow when the sun is shining on wet leaves.

I’m experimenting with more texture in my work this week. The technique makes painting fast on these small panels. I’m eager to try a larger panel.

This week’s Different Strokes project is about shadows. For me it is also about the color and texture of shadows. I used a “funny brush” to get the textures; boy was that fun!

I’ll have to pull out more shadow photos from my bank and make a few more paintings like this.

One of my favorite shadow painters is Linda Apple.
