The entry to the quilter’s shop in Cannon Beach is not just another pretty spot.

The moodiness of the dark wood accented with splashes of bright pink poppies and lavender asters takes your breath away.

I bought paint sticks at that fantastic store, and have been using them to paint en plain air when bringing the whole oil paint kit won’t work.

Playing catch at the beach

© Pam Van Londen 2008 Cannon Beach Catch 8x8x1 in irridescent oil on gessoboard SOLD © Pam Van Londen 2008 Cannon Beach Catch 8x8x1 in iridescent oil on gessoboard

More photos of people playing on the beach has inspired me to paint more 8×8 panels in oils.

This one includes iridescent paints, a bit of oil pastels, and regular oil paint.

The iridescent paint adds a glow and sparkle that we experience at the beach.

To cool off on very hot days, we sit next to the Mary’s River and dip our feet.

I usually sit in the shade with paints and the kids jump off the rope and rearrange the dam.

The dogs play and bark, and sit contentedly.

Paint and a poem

Not For Sale

Congrats to Susan and Catherine! This gift will soon be on its way to you!

It is painted with iridescent oil sticks on clayboard with a poem by Jean Anouilh scratched in.

It reads: Love is, above all, the gift of oneself.

These three paintings were done at Cannon Beach, Oregon. We had perfect weather for walking the streets where every plot has a blooming garden and every stretch of beach has interesting tidbits to pick up and ponder.

Buck loves to tug

© Pam Van Londen 2008 Buck and Heather 8x8x1 in oil on clayboard SOLD © Pam Van Londen 2008 Buck and Heather 8x8x1 in oil on clayboard

The neighbor’s beautiful dog, Buck, loves to tug while the humans play frisbee golf.

Buck’s coat shines and he smiles a lot. He’s also good at guarding the beer when the humans are on a break.

I’m still testing the clayboard surface in this painting. It soaks up the paint and dries quickly; perhaps too quickly to blend nicely. A coat of varnish will help it as well.

Walking the beach in mild weather instills contemplation which becomes a healing exercise. I’ll be traveling back to Cannon Beach for more healing in just a week! Ahh…I’m breathing better already just thinking about it.

While I’m there I plan to paint more beach scenes, visit lots of galleries, eat great food, and ride horses on the beach.

River bed

© Pam Van Londen 2007 Riverbed 1 oil on clayboard on 8 x 8 x 1 canvas SOLD © Pam Van Londen 2007 Riverbed 1 oil on clayboard on 8 x 8 x 1 canvas

I’ve mentioned how I love rivers. Here’s another one! I have no idea which river this is, though I suspect it is the Jedediah Smith River in the heart of the California Redwoods.
I’m trying out clayboard which soaks up the oil paint more than canvas and leaves a matte finish. Not sure I like it the final look but do like the faster drying time, to a degree.

My last major self portrait was painted on a 3-foot square canvas during my 3rd year in college. It was a Chuck Close kind of composition; in-your-face close-cropped of my head. I carried that canvas around all this time but painted a portrait of the kids over it 2 years ago.

Now that painting shows up in this new self portrait. The fluffy being with paws will make you laugh out loud! He’s so proud of himself that he shows up twice in the painting. Such an ego!

These two paintings have been painted long after the 3rd Annual Harvest Music Festival ended, but the memories of Fall sunshine, great wine, and abundant flowers are still inspiring me.

The event was made more fun with the help of friends who enjoyed sketching along with me.

My beloved son and granddaughter were swinging one day and I captured their joy in pixels.

I’ve transferred the joy to oil on gessoboard.

Let’s pray he gets to see her for Father’s day. We all miss her so much!

My tiny garden on the South side of our apartment has a beautiful cedar tree and newish fence. This yard is mainly for the dog, so our “blooms” are silk and are pretty all year round.

When I have just a few minutes to paint, I will often sit out in the sun to avoid the fumes indoors.

Crown Point again

Crown Point is an Oregon favorite which I’ve painted twice now. I started with an 8×10 in acrylic, then today tried this 5×7 oil on gessoboard. Next is a large format in oil or acrylic.

This depiction is of an August sunset which cast pink onto all the light surfaces.

I’ll be traveling back to the Gorge this summer to hike the rest of the falls missed last summer and to paint the Oneonta Falls from below (after traversing the log jam and quiet pools; canvas in hand!).

The birds are singing and the trees and bushes blooming on the OSU campus.

We have had enough warm days to allow plein air painting, so here’s a quick little oil on gessoboard to get back into the swing of spring.

Gessoboard is new to me…I like it’s smoothness and will be painting on it for my 8×8 series for the rest of the year.

After 2 years of looking for my lost Grand Canyon photos, I found just a few, but enough to inspire me to paint a view.

This view is of who-knows-what at the North Rim. I didn’t keep notes about what I shot, so if you know where this spot is, feel free to write and let me know.

The painting is done after a month of observing and repainting. The flatness is intriguing, but the challenge for me is to paint depth with color and size.

Thank you to a wonderful student who handed me stem of orchids 2 weeks ago! I’ve painted this quick study in preparation for a larger one that is already in progress.

I’m hoping to paint delicate petals; something I find hard to do with acrylic. Perhaps my third attempt will be with oils.

Who knows the name of this orchid?

The new price of this painting is $30. Stay tuned for a buy now button.

Last summer, my daughter and two friends wandered through the Oregon Garden outside Silverton, Oregon.

I was there to paint and they were there to find adventures. They happened upon a blackberry patch and enjoyed a great snack.

I do love to paint grass in its many shades of green, yellow, and other earthy colors.

During spring break, I had the good fortune of visiting Cannon Beach, Oregon to meet some new friends, eat great food, and gallery hop. It snowed, hailed, and blustered much of the break, but on the last day, we were able to walk the long beach without inclement weather; in fact it was beautiful!

I snapped a few shots with my phone (which cost me $16 to download!) since I had forgotten my camera. I combined a few shots of the women we visited with Haystack Rock and painted this landscape/portrait.

I Love Lucy’s Garden

© Pam Van Londen 2007 Lucy’s Garden 3 acrylic on canvas on 12 x 12 x 1 canvas SOLD © Pam Van Londen 2007 Lucy’s Garden 3 acrylic on canvas on 12 x 12 x 1 canvas

Lucy is a great shepard that guards a quaint little blue house with desert garden, right here in wet Corvallis.

The potted spiky plant (let me know if you have a name for the plant) along with chicks and hens provides a lot of color against the house.

So I’ve painted it twice. Thank you to the person who bought the first one! This one is bigger and needs no frame.

Each corner of this garden is delightful and when I have time, I’ll be sitting there painting when the cactii are blooming.

Ratatouille for dinner?

© Pam Van Londen 2007 Ratatouille1 acrylic on canvas on 12 x 12 x 1 canvas SOLD © Pam Van Londen 2007 Ratatouille1 acrylic on canvas on 12 x 12 x 1 canvas

The triptych I did using the same color scheme and layout has now become a quad-iptych (spelling hint anyone?). It is part of my Food on the Table series.

I have been slowly working on this Ratatouille still life since the holidays and feel it is finally done.

The ingredients never did get cooked up for dinner, so I’ll buy them again.

When all four are hanging on the wall, they create quite a presence in the room. A kitchen or dining room (including some restaurants I know) will be brighted up with these 12×12 canvases. In this orientation, they fill a medium sized wall. If your wall needs horizontal or vertical space filled, they can be rearranged.

To see them in person, give ma call at 541-760-1449.

Camellias and crocus are blooming everywhere, but in my yard are daffodils, which to me means Spring is Here!

For two days I was able to stand outside to paint them in all their live glory. Now that the weather is back to late winter conditions, I’m inside doing touch ups.

Violets have such delicate faces which can missed unless you get your nose right up to them.

Most of the year, the violets are in bloom at the base of the daffodils. Thank you for planting them oh most wonderful landlord. They are a cheery site at the end of a long day.

The NFS paintings above have been painted over and are no longer available.

Winter scenes are beautiful if you can look through the darkness.

These paintings were started a month ago. As I finish up a larger painting, I used leftover paint to start the first layers. Each other day I painted, more layers of paint were applied.

Then in one painting session, I finished up eight!

The forgrounds use bright reds, purples, and greens and the backgrounds use faded blue-greens and lavenders.

These 8×8 panels are painted in acrylic and framed in black laquered wood with no glass. They are lightweight, making shipping quite inexpensive.

Oregon Garden revisited

SOLD © Pam Van Londen 2007 Oregon Garden 3 acrylic on gallery edged canvas on canvas SOLD © Pam Van Londen 2007 Oregon Garden 3 acrylic on gallery edged canvas on canvas

The weather, although lovely and sunny this morning, was not conducive to sitting outside to paint, so I found a photo taken at Oregon Garden so I could be outside in mind and spirit if not in body.

This scene is typical of the trees, grass, and flowers found along the tour path at the Garden. I like the three bands of color/texture, which is perfect for the vertical format.

This holiday cactus looked great in the store and for a few weeks in December. I was able to paint its portrait before I almost killed it. It’s doing well now but has no blossoms.

Red Tulips

© Pam Van Londen 2007 Red Tulips 1 acrylic on canvasboard on 8 x 8 x .5 canvas

We have daffodil shoots peeking out the snow now, and red tulips transforming out of paint, to remind us that this weather will pass.

I just keep painting and ignore it; it chases the blues away (really, it keeps them from coming).

This painting has become a wedding gift for a dear friend.

Triptych completed with soup ingredients

The Tea and Satsumas painting and the Salsa 4 painting have a companion named Leek, Zuch, and Carrots. The three look stunning together. They are part of my Food on the Table Series.

I finished the triptych today so I could make soup! The eggplant and endive composition did not materialize because I waited too long and the veggies spoiled.

So instead of ratatouille, I made leek soup with tomatillos, zuchini, carrots, and chicken broth. Yummm.

A friend has asked for a painting to transfer to shirts.

My existing Mary’s Peak image has color that doesn’t work well on dark fabric, so I’ve painted this smaller version from a different angle.

Stay tuned for a look at it on shirts.

More salsa, anyone?

SOLD! © Pam Van Londen 2007 Salsa 5 acrylic on canvasboard on 8 x 8 x 1 canvas

This fifth salsa painting is part of the framed canvasboard set. I gave it to my sister for Christmas because she’s got a kitchen full of peppers!

Next up is eggplant, onion, carrots, zuchini, leek, and endive.
