I’m hanging some work at the Albany Heartspring Wellness Center but they needed another piece for an exam room.

This image is based on a smaller daily painting done earlier this year. We’ll see how it looks on their deep orange wall.

It was class outdoors again last evening. We painted at the Crystal Lake Boat Landing in Corvallis. Due to the heat of the day, many folks were boating, rafting, mud-soaking, and biking. The atmosphere was jubilant.

My favorite scene was the harmonica player conoeing with two dogs. He floated down river then appeared again later; he must have done the whole trip again! The lighting and the music seemed to transport me back 200 years and I expected Tom Sawyer to come strolling by.

Crow has something to say, either, “Hey, painter, move along; this is my log,” or “there is a scrap of food here and it is mine!”

I’m continuing with the same technique I’ve been using for months now…transparent oil paint over an underpainting of alizarin crimson, with obvious and very loose brush strokes, on archival Ampersand Claybord panels.

I like how the paint soaks in and semi-dries enough to paint over it immediately. It has a tacky surface unlike oil on gesso, which seems to sit on the surface and get pushed around instead of allow new layers…I just don’t have the patience to wait for it to dry before adding new layers.

Nine of the 14 paintings of crows I’ve done this year have new homes. I must be on a roll.

Most crows do not live a year. But some live to year 14.

Shatin Pass Road in Hong Kong

It is that time again to paint from Google’s Street View for the Virtual Paintout. This one is from Hong Kong’s Shatin Pass Road. It is an old narrow street winding around a hill which overlooks the city.

The day Google’s cameras captured the road, only a few pedestrians were walking it. I would think such a pleasant place so near the city would be crowded with walkers.

While lazing around Avery Park awhile ago, I studied the patterns of trees in the main field. Trees which bend and grow diagonally often create interesting compositions. Color is irrelevant; make it whatever supports the composition.

After another evening of peaceful painting out of doors, I have this panel to show. Painting sheep so small was not as easy as I expected, so I’ll be practicing more.

Oregonians are so lucky to have such beautiful country so close at hand. Just a minute’s drive and we are out into the fresh air and rural settings.

It is a joy to sit outside and paint with your girlfriends. Nobody judges and we enjoy catching up on family happenings.

Denise and her husband have quite a garden in the middle of town, along with chickens and dogs.

The strawberries are excellent to eat and brightly colored for painting.

This painting was painted plein air last week but I spent a few days looking at it and making touchups to brighten the colors.

The use of large, obvious brush strokes is something I do in many paintings, though you don’t see them in my blog very often.

Only about half seem to turn out right the first time, so I massage them for months and perhaps get a few more that work.

My plein air class had a great session at Barb and Chad’s home up on a hill outside Adair Village last week.

The garden was immense and all was blooming. The views on all sides were spectacular!

The pets were fun, too.

This crow symbolizes my desire to take flight and vacation somewhere.

I won’t have much opportunity to get away from my routine life until August.

I shall live vicariously through all your vacations until then.

This image was painted for the Virtual Paintout. I found some lovely footage from Google to work from.

Instead of my usual Alizarin Crimson underpainting, I used Cerulean Blue. For the clouds, I added iridescent white. I refrained from overworking anything here; a difficult feat some days.

Number two in a series of many to come. Arizona and New Mexico and surrounding states provide so many landforms to recreate in their glorious colors.

Several years ago, I traveled the country to photograph and paint this amazing land we live in. Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument was quite a site at sunset.

The camera shutters were jamming shut, but I managed to get a few usable reference photos. Look for more paintings here in the next few weeks.

These crocus bloomed months ago…perhaps I want the spring to start over. Sure wish the sun would come out! I prefer sun over rain this time of year.

If you know the name of this land formation from AZ, UT, NM, please write in and let me know. I think it is from AZ but just caught it driving by.

One of my memories from childhood is that the fields of crops were labeled, which meant I was learning something as I drove by. I’d love our highways to tell us what we’re seeing as we drive along. Perhaps we can someday use GPS to provide blow-by-blow descriptions from our phones.

Highway 99 in Oregon is my favorite. Every turn brings a new spectacular view of coastal and Cascade mountains, quaint valley farm scenes, and a light show of clouds.

While traveling back from a track meet in Elmira, a friend captured this rain storm.

I started this painting before last weekend’s Art Walk, worked on it while I had an audience milling around, then finished it today.

The layered colors are mostly transparent, so there is an etherial feel to the image.

This item is featured in an Etsy Treasury.

I’ve been staring at the reference photo for these two images for 4 years! I love the composition and loneliness of the photo. The mood is different when painted.
I’m sure I’ll paint more of it.

I’m using scraffito with these two as well as the works from earlier this week.

My favorite garden on the way to work is behind the Cafe Yumm.

The hedges are trimmed regularly so they are round and the aspens are lined up in a row. The concrete wall is pointed at an angle, so the whole scene is whimsical.

Each season brings new colors and lighting to enjoy on my quick jaunt.
