I’ve painted a couple of car portraits to show at the Driving Canby Fun event on June 11. We’ll be camping and shaking hands with car fans from all over Oregon and Washington.

Last year I began working on a series of paintings done mostly from memory of driving through the Southwest and Eastern Oregon. The desert and high-desert grasses, dirt colors, and rock formations are fascinating and compel me to paint them.

In my usual loose style using transparent oil paint on an alizerin crimson underpainting make up this triptych.

In addition, these each use a bit of sgraffito to add texture and small details.

More trees in swirls

© Pam Van Londen 2010, Park Trees, oil on claybord, 8x8 SOLD © Pam Van Londen 2010, Park Trees, 8×8 oil on claybord

I like swirls; you like swirls; so I painted more swirls.

I live in Orange country so had to use a saturated an orange hue as I could, along with my favorite color blue-green.

If you’re an artist I highly recommend participating in the weekly challenge at Daily Paintworks.

The Daily Paintworks Challenges are fun to work on, so here’s another one for the Color Challenge. I’m using a split compliment scheme (traditional color wheel).

This composition is easy and allows me to focus just on the color arrangement.

I’ve also used sgraffito here to provide a bit of whimsical detail.

Hot Cocoa with Shiny Gift Bag

© Pam Van Londen 2010, Hot Cocoa with Shiny Giftbag, oil on claybord, 8x8 SOLD © Pam Van Londen 2010, Hot Cocoa with Shiny Giftbag, 8×8 oil on claybord

I’ve painted this one to meet the Daily Paintworks challenge. I’ve used my usual loose style in oil on Claybord.

It’s hard to get the really saturated colors present on the shiny purple giftbag…it reflects a lot of permanent rose but purple diazinon does not dry shiny…it dries flat, so perhaps later I’ll add a shiny varnish.

Yes, I drank the cocoa. Mmmmm.

We spent a few days hiking the 10 waterfalls at Silver Creek Falls State Park. Even though it rained most of the time, we were able to hike them all.

Holding an umbrella for miles is like using a cane; a little extra work but worth it.

Because it wasn’t hot and crowded, we were able to hike pretty quickly.

The winter blues are over…I feel like painting again. Soon I’ll be painting outside again.

I’ve been asked to offer a painting workshop, which I am thinking about. If you are are interested in learning to paint in oil on claybord, use my contact form to let me know.

Clear Lake is one of my favorite spots in Oregon. You can fish in quiet, camp, and eat a burger if necessary. The water is clear, of course, and provides colorful reflections for painting.

The Monthly Painting Challenge for February is to paint your rendition of some ripples at the shoreline.

This image is painted with thinned oil on Ampersand Claybord and scratched with pencil and rubber-tipped brushes.

Even in winter, we might hear songbirds talking to each other. They make all kinds of sounds, which I will be illustrating here for the next few weeks.

This week’s sounds are Tweet and Chirp. See them next week at the Mod Pod on 2nd street for the Art Walk.

Fifteen years ago, Marie le Glatin Keis led her first group of wannabe artists to Provence where she inspired us for 8 days. We sketched, ate local, and shared great views.

Her inspiration is far reaching and continues to be the reason I paint. Her presence is felt even in her absence.

Learn about her celebration of life.

This simple abstract uses oil pain in thin washes on a clay panel. Then I’ve used a tool to scratch in several scribbled lines.

When I was in college, I had a solo show called Scribbles. I would sit up painting scribbles in various media while relaxing with wine and jazz. I hung them behind glass with no frames (who could afford it back then). One of these days I’ll photograph all those paintings and add them to this blog! Guess I need an assistant.

These crow images were painted in oil on Ampersand claybord; my favorite surface.

I usually start with a red underpainting and layer thinned haphazard stokes on top. Then I use graphite to etch a bit of thinner lines, adding a bit of whimsey.

You can purchase this set or each individually. If you are interested in purchasing, write the check to HVCC to add to my daughter’s choir tour account. They are singing in Vienna this summer.

In anticipation of the coming winter, I’ve painted three stormy images.
My many drives up and down Hwy 99W are always inspiring no matter what the weather.

I used a gray underpainting instead of alizarin crimson this time. I miss the red.

This trio of oil paintings on canvas board are images from artist Donna Beverly‘s property outside Philomath, Oregon.

They are painted in the Impressionist style instead of my more unique style of underpainting in alizeran crimson and abstracting the landscape with large obvious brushstrokes.

From this perch, you can see for miles on a clear day. If you sit there awhile, you notice the light changing.

The first one was revised in 2013.

I just love photographing and painting rivers…so peaceful yet invigorating.

This 7th image of the Molalla River in Oregon uses a bit of splattering to render the rocks.

The 8th image uses sgraffito. I scratch into the paint with a pencil and render small lines.

I visited the Mod Pod store earlier this week to hang some of my daily paintings and was inspired by the trendy-retro-FUN atmosphere of the place.

That experience combined with this image I saw behind my eyelids when I shut them after looking at something too long, resulted in this playful non-objective painting on canvas.

See it in person at the Mod Pod.
