This 19th Canyon Dream painting is of Georgia O’Keefe’s mountain in New Mexico, called The Pedernal. This view is from the campground between Ghost Ranch and Abiquiu.

I sold three Canyon Dream paintings this week, so am eager to repaint some of them.

They never look the same twice; I’m just not that kind of artist.

Canyon Dreams 15

SOLD © Pam Van Londen 2010, Canyon Dreams 15, 8×8 oil on clayboard

This scene was painted a few months ago on an alizarin crimson underpainting. Today’s version uses pthalo green underpainting, in two shades.

The watercolory transparent effect comes from using thinned, overlapping color.

Nest of Prosperity

SOLD © Pam Van Londen 2010, Nest of Prosperity 2, 8×8 oil on clayboard

Green is the color of money (in this country, anyway) and reflects Mother Earth’s abundance. A nest of eggs symbolizes prosperity; something many of us need during this trying time.

This work uses transparent oil paint on a clay panel with a bit of scraffito.

Crows on the Beach 7

SOLD © Pam Van Londen 2010, Crows at the Beach 7, 8×8 oil on clayboard

I’ve sold the other two of this composition, so felt compelled to paint it again.

I find painting ripples a challenge to render and they are quite different every time I do them.

When painted on Claybord, it is tougher to get smaller ripples. I’ll try it again on Gessobord to accomplish that.

Valley Morning Clouds

SOLD © Pam Van Londen 2010, Valley Morning 5 clouds, 8×8 oil on clayboard

Ah, it was a plein air day! Painting outside in perfect weather is invigorating and inspiring. It gives you a chance to look up at the sky and contemplate the clouds.

Artists often have their heads in the clouds; they are studying the shape and colors.

Preparing for summer flowers

SOLD © Pam Van Londen 2010, Hollyhocks 1, 8×8 oil on claybord

Hollyhocks are one of my favorite flowers. They are found in the south leaning against stucco homes and wooden fences.

We have them here, too, but they are often double-headed and less delicate.
When the sun shines through the petals the color is quite bright.

Caw!

SOLD © Pam Van Londen 2010, Crow on the Beach 6, 8×8 oil on clayboard

For the love of crows. They are everywhere, cleaning up after us. This one is waiting for something to eat.

I was able to approach within 5 feet before it flew away.

It hopped around, called out, and checked the wood for morsels now and then.

More crows on the beach

A popular series of recent paintings is of crows. Here are some images painted from video I took at another trip to Taft, Oregon, south of Lincoln City on the Oregon coast.

I’m trying the same technique as the canyon series where I start with an alizarin crimson underpainting and layer thinned pure hues on top, using as few brush strokes as possible.

This month’s Virtual Paintout is of the Canary Islands. Since the participating artists could not fly to the islands to paint plein air, we used Google’s pedestrian view to find scenes we wanted to paint.

The one-lane road of Camino Matoso would be quite a bike ride. The simplicity and expansive views are spectacular.

In the towns, you’ll see wall-to-wall hotels and cars; not so pleasing.

Brick Wall
Monthly Painting Challenge

© Pam Van Londen 2010, Brick Wall 1, 8×8 oil on clayboard

For April’s Monthly Painting Challenge, we are painting a fairly flat image; a brick wall with climbing ivy and electrical boxes and tubes.

This panel is the third attempt to render something interesting.
Painting every brick is tedious and sometimes renders a boring painting. So I’ve tried circular strokes rather than rectangular.

Every other Tuesday, Dana Marie from Dana Marie Gallery in Corvallis, Orgon, posts a new photo to draw inspiration from on the Inspiration All Around Us blog.

This oak tree is my first submission. I revised it in 2013 to improve color and composition.

Virtual Paintout of Norway
Stravenger

I have plenty of my own photos to paint from until I can get outside to paint plein air.

But I have never been to Norway to paint, so I have done it virtually, for the Virtual Paintout monthly challenge. It uses Google Maps to help artists find a view of the city they want to paint.

Monthly Painting Challenge
Creek Reflections

SOLD © Pam Van Londen 2010, Johnson Creek 6 Reflections, 8×8 oil on gessoboard

This month’s Painting Challenge is Winter Creek, a complicated landscape with confusing branches and subtle colors; one I find the hardest to paint.

I am still working with a transparent oil technique, this time on gesso rather than Claybord, so I’ve left the crimson underpainting showing through and exaggerated the color where I could.

This location is my favorite in the Sellwood neighborhood of Portland.

Molalla River Shore 3

SOLD © Pam Van Londen 2009, Molalla River Shore 3, 8x8x1 on oil on clayboard

The transparent oil technique that I’ve been using the last couple of weeks took a new turn this morning with this painting on Gessobord (instead of my usual Claybord.

The topmost oilier layers push the bottommost layers to the side, creating thin dark edges. I like this style and will try it again next painting session.

Driving towards the Cascade Mts in the morning when the sun is shining is spectacular!

Even if the mountains are a ways away, the lighting brightens up the grasses of the valley floor and cools off the far peaks.

This painting is the first in a series of memories of our drive from Corvallis to Lebanon this morning.

Canyon Dreams for Breakfast

© Pam Van Londen 2010, Canyon Dreams 8, oil on clayboard, 8x8 SOLD © Pam Van Londen 2010, Canyon Dreams 8, 8×8 oil on clayboard

My schedule is so loose this term that I can paint before I eat or work! I’m liking it this way.

Today’s watercolory oil painting uses a bit of splatter to represent gravel in the soil. It is an interesting touch that I’ll probably try again tomorrow.

Pennsylvania Snowfall

In April 2006, we had just left NYC’s spring-time glory and overnighted in Pennsylvania. We woke up to snow! The kids in the neighborhood enjoyed it, of course. They played in the tall, dried grass, slid down the slice, and threw themselves down to make snow angels.

This painting was done from a reference photo taken during that playful time. It is part of the Monthly Painting Challenge. See what others are rendering for the month of February.

Columbia Gorge Beacon Rock

© Pam Van Londen 2010, Columbia Gorge Beacon Rock 1, oil on clayboard, 8x8 SOLD © Pam Van Londen 2010, Columbia Gorge Beacon Rock 1, 8×8 oil on clayboard

I’ll be showing my Columbia River daily paintings at one of three locations in Feb. Stay tuned for an update.

This image was painted from a photo taken at the Women’s Forum Park on the Columbia River, Oregon side. It is a mighty river!

SOLD © Pam Van Londen 2009, Flowerpot Around the Corner, 8x8x1 on oil on clayboard

I think this is my quickest painting yet (just an hour). I’m working on loose brush strokes and exaggerated color.
I just downloaded 64 photos from my phone which were mostly gardens around my neighborhood. Corvallis is sure a pretty place to live!

Donated to the Heart of the Valley Children’s Choir annual fundraiser.

Joy 1, 2, and 3

© Pam Van Londen 2009, Joy 3, 8x8x1 on acrylic on canvasboard

Due to some technical glitches, I am repainting this series. I’m experimenting with thick, squirted paint and a funny brush made of several rubber tips.

Check back next week for the final work. The paints are quite thick and take a long time to dry.

Ceder Waxwings

© Pam Van Londen 2009, Ceder Waxwing 1, oil on gessobord, 8x8
SOLD © Pam Van Londen 2009, Ceder Waxwing 1, 8x8x1 on oil on gessobord

One of my favorite birds is the ceder wax wing, for it’s subtle color changes.

Waiting for the Wave

SOLD © Pam Van Londen 2009, Waiting for the Wave 1, 8x8x1 on oil on claybord

These two kids enjoyed skimming the waves two summers ago. I guess I’m feeling a bit sad that summer is over again. We do have such great adventures then.

Painting a wonderful memory helps it last. Consider commissioning a painting of your favorite memory. An original painting can stay in the family through many generations, adding to the family history and leaving an impression for your descendants to enjoy.

These three panels were inspired by the bright colors at the pumpkin patch we visited in November of 2008. Purple rain boots against the orange pumpkins, the bright yellow-green apple tree leaves, and the blue shadows made some colorful images.

Purchase these individually or all three to hang a triptych in your living room or office. They are featured at  ModPod, Modern Fun Furnishings, on Second Street in Corvallis, Oregon.

This is the first of three paintings started en plein air this week at Taft, Oregon, south of Lincoln City. I forgot to bring more white with me, so the other two are waiting for a chance to be finished up.

The waves were dramatic this week but the bay was calm. Check back later this week.

SOLD © Pam Van Londen 2009, San Fransisco Street, 8x16x1 on oil on claybord

This image is a diptych; two panels painted together.

I’ll frame them separately, but if you wanted, they can be framed together.

I painted them in oil on claybord, but was going for a watercolor effect, which I pulled off.

I invented much of the color to add some life to a sometimes washed-out scene.

Mt Tabor View

SOLD © Pam Van Londen 2009, Mt Tabor View, 8x8x1 on oil on claybord

In preparation for painting en plain air at the Mt Tabor Centennial Celebration in Portland, Oregon, I am painting scenes of Portland.

This image is of a view from the top of the mountain. I will find out what major street we can see here; not sure which direction I’m pointing.
