This 19th Canyon Dream painting is of Georgia O’Keefe’s mountain in New Mexico, called The Pedernal. This view is from the campground between Ghost Ranch and Abiquiu.

I sold three Canyon Dream paintings this week, so am eager to repaint some of them.

They never look the same twice; I’m just not that kind of artist.

Canyon Dreams 15

This scene was painted a few months ago on an alizarin crimson underpainting. Today’s version uses pthalo green underpainting, in two shades.

The watercolory transparent effect comes from using thinned, overlapping color.

Nest of Prosperity

Green is the color of money (in this country, anyway) and reflects Mother Earth’s abundance. A nest of eggs symbolizes prosperity; something many of us need during this trying time.

This work uses transparent oil paint on a clay panel with a bit of scraffito.

Valley Morning Clouds

Ah, it was a plein air day! Painting outside in perfect weather is invigorating and inspiring. It gives you a chance to look up at the sky and contemplate the clouds.

Artists often have their heads in the clouds; they are studying the shape and colors.

More crows on the beach

A popular series of recent paintings is of crows. Here are some images painted from video I took at another trip to Taft, Oregon, south of Lincoln City on the Oregon coast.

I’m trying the same technique as the canyon series where I start with an alizarin crimson underpainting and layer thinned pure hues on top, using as few brush strokes as possible.

Monthly Painting Challenge
Creek Reflections

SOLD © Pam Van Londen 2010, Johnson Creek 6 Reflections, 8×8 oil on gessoboard

This month’s Painting Challenge is Winter Creek, a complicated landscape with confusing branches and subtle colors; one I find the hardest to paint.

I am still working with a transparent oil technique, this time on gesso rather than Claybord, so I’ve left the crimson underpainting showing through and exaggerated the color where I could.

This location is my favorite in the Sellwood neighborhood of Portland.

Molalla River Shore 3

The transparent oil technique that I’ve been using the last couple of weeks took a new turn this morning with this painting on Gessobord (instead of my usual Claybord.

The topmost oilier layers push the bottommost layers to the side, creating thin dark edges. I like this style and will try it again next painting session.

Canyon Dreams for Breakfast

© Pam Van Londen 2010, Canyon Dreams 8, oil on clayboard, 8x8 SOLD © Pam Van Londen 2010, Canyon Dreams 8, 8×8 oil on clayboard

My schedule is so loose this term that I can paint before I eat or work! I’m liking it this way.

Today’s watercolory oil painting uses a bit of splatter to represent gravel in the soil. It is an interesting touch that I’ll probably try again tomorrow.

Waiting for the Wave

These two kids enjoyed skimming the waves two summers ago. I guess I’m feeling a bit sad that summer is over again. We do have such great adventures then.

Painting a wonderful memory helps it last. Consider commissioning a painting of your favorite memory. An original painting can stay in the family through many generations, adding to the family history and leaving an impression for your descendants to enjoy.

These three panels were inspired by the bright colors at the pumpkin patch we visited in November of 2008. Purple rain boots against the orange pumpkins, the bright yellow-green apple tree leaves, and the blue shadows made some colorful images.

Purchase these individually or all three to hang a triptych in your living room or office. They are featured at  ModPod, Modern Fun Furnishings, on Second Street in Corvallis, Oregon.

San Francisco Challenge

SOLD © Pam Van Londen 2009, San Fransisco Street, 8x16x1 on oil on claybord

This image is a diptych; two panels painted together.

I’ll frame them separately, but if you wanted, they can be framed together.

I painted them in oil on claybord, but was going for a watercolor effect, which I pulled off.

I invented much of the color to add some life to a sometimes washed-out scene.

Mt Tabor View

In preparation for painting en plain air at the Mt Tabor Centennial Celebration in Portland, Oregon, I am painting scenes of Portland.

This image is of a view from the top of the mountain. I will find out what major street we can see here; not sure which direction I’m pointing.
