The original version of this painting was a ‘palette cleaner’…I used the paint left over from a previous painting. I’ve added more color now and like it so much better!

The colors are quite different from my regular palette. Some of you out there like earthier colors.

The original version of this painting was highlighted in the Gazette-Times article about the First Thursday Art Walk for Nov 4, 2010.

Valley Morning #10

© Pam Van Londen 2010, Valley Morning 10, Acrylic on Clayboard, 8x8 SOLD © Pam Van Londen 2010, Valley Morning 10, 8×8 Acrylic on Clayboard

The chilly morning with sunlight burning through the fog inspires me to paint! It is warm and cozy in the studio but I will have to venture out in the freeze to get the day’s list of chores taken care of.

This painting was stolen off the doorstep of its new owner when delivered. If you see it online or in person anywhere, please notify me or the local Police. Thank you.

Canyon Dreams 31

© Pam Van Londen 2010, Canyon Dreams 31, oil on claybord, 8x8  SOLD © Pam Van Londen 2010, Canyon Dreams 31, 8×8 oil on claybord

This painting is very abstracted and was painted without a reference…I just like to feel the brush strokes and don’t think too much about where they go.

What it is about slot canyons that create excite- ment? Perhaps it is the cool air, mystery around the corner, hidden treasures, and potential danger?
These paintings are abstracted and from my imagination. They represent a frontal and/or sky view with a raging river.

I had some half-paintings sitting around so I finished them by adding crow silhouettes. These are made with oil paint and oil stick. Each comes framed in black.

I’m getting ready for my winter sale so must clean out unnecessary clutter from the studio. I have a stack of paintings I just can’t look at anymore, they will get a similar treatment.

It has cooled down here and is raining again so I could buckle down and paint!

Very few leaves have turned bright colors yet but that time is not far off. I can smell it in the air.
If you have a Fall scene you need painted for home, office, or a gift, please contact me with the details. I have time to help you out!

Sarris Garden #7

© Pam Van Londen 2010, Greg Sarris’ Garden 7, oil on claybord, 8x8 SOLD © Pam Van Londen 2010, Greg Sarris’ Garden 7, 8×8 oil on claybord

Greg Sarris’ garden provides so many lovely painting scenes; I have yet to finish them all.

Can you smell the lavender and hear the grass rustling while the bees buzz around?

More arctic landscapes

© Pam Van Londen 2010, Arctic 3, Acrylic on Clayboard, 8x8  SOLD © Pam Van Londen 2010, Arctic 3, 8×8 Acrylic on Clayboard

I’ve switched to acrylic paint lately to see how it works on Ampersand Claybord panels. I like its staining properties and the textures created when I remove partly-dried paint.

In addition, I’m using interference and iridescent paints to provide interesting color effects, which can be seen when you move from right to left. These paints also provide 3-D texture at full strength.

Come to Fall Festival to view them in person…the photos don’t catch all the fascinating nuances.

Arctic landscape

© Pam Van Londen 2010, Arctic 1, Acrylic on Clayboard, 8x8 SOLD © Pam Van Londen 2010, Arctic 1, 8×8 Acrylic on Clayboard

I have been experimenting with iridescent acrylic paint on Claybord lately and like the watercolor effects on the clay for the underpainting and thicker shiny pearls on the top layers.

Canyon Dreams 25

© Pam Van Londen 2010, Canyon Dreams 25, oil on claybord, 8x8 SOLD © Pam Van Londen 2010, Canyon Dreams 25, 8×8 oil on claybord

One of my favorite scenes while driving includes blooming sage, pinyon trees, dried grasses, dark canyons, distant mountains, and high clouds in the sky.

To keep myself awake on long road trips, I’ll pretend I’m painting the scenes. It’s like practicing without any materials.

I’m in a blue mood and wishing I were traveling to a far off desert canyon.

I’m also in an abstract painting mood…just love experimenting with empasto and iridescent colors.

I was in the mood for something new when I found some rice paper with swirls and these lightweight wooden plates. I painted on them with iridescent colors and finished with two layers of satin varnish.

Stop by the Mod Pod on Second Street to see these in person.

Last year I began working on a series of paintings done mostly from memory of driving through the Southwest and Eastern Oregon. The desert and high-desert grasses, dirt colors, and rock formations are fascinating and compel me to paint them.

In my usual loose style using transparent oil paint on an alizerin crimson underpainting make up this triptych.

In addition, these each use a bit of sgraffito to add texture and small details.

German Landscapes

I’m joining the Daily Paintworks weekly painting challenges. I’ve got two done and I’m not sure how long it’ll take me to catch up to all the week’s I’ve missed.

These German roadways remind me of Oregon…lush hills and farmland with peaceful highways circling them.

These two pieces use my transparent oil technique on Claybord.

Silver Creek Falls

We spent a few days hiking the 10 waterfalls at Silver Creek Falls State Park. Even though it rained most of the time, we were able to hike them all.

Holding an umbrella for miles is like using a cane; a little extra work but worth it.

Because it wasn’t hot and crowded, we were able to hike pretty quickly.

It’s just now winter, but why not think about warmer times? I look forward to sunning, like these butterflies. Where do butterflies hang out when it is snowy here?
