Number two in a series of many to come. Arizona and New Mexico and surrounding states provide so many landforms to recreate in their glorious colors.
Have a request for a painting of your favorite landmark or mountain? Send me a photo and I’ll work on it for you.

$64 © Pam Van Londen 2010, Oregon Pipe 1, 8×8 oil on clayboard
Several years ago, I traveled the country to photograph and paint this amazing land we live in. Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument was quite a site at sunset.
The camera shutters were jamming shut, but I managed to get a few usable reference photos. Look for more paintings here in the next few weeks.
Crocus revisited
May 28, 2010 Abstract and Non-objective, Daily Painting | Comments (0) | by Pam Van Londen

$64 © Pam Van Londen 2010, Crocus 1, 8×8 oil on clayboard
These crocus bloomed months ago…perhaps I want the spring to start over. Sure wish the sun would come out! I prefer sun over rain this time of year.
Canyon Dreams 21

$64 © Pam Van Londen 2010, Canyon Dreams 21, 8×8 oil on clayboard
If you know the name of this land formation from AZ, UT, NM, please write in and let me know. I think it is from AZ but just caught it driving by.
One of my memories from childhood is that the fields of crops were labeled, which meant I was learning something as I drove by. I’d love our highways to tell us what we’re seeing as we drive along. Perhaps we can someday use GPS to provide blow-by-blow descriptions from our phones.
South Beach, Oregon

$64 © Pam Van Londen 2010, South Beach 4, 8×8 oil on clayboard
This lonely tree has withstood the winds and rain for many decades and is a sentinel to the South Beach campers. May or June is the month to visit the beach to see the wildflowers blooming.

$64 © Pam Van Londen 2010, Black Eyed Susans 1, 8×8 oil on clayboard
Corvallis is alive with flowers right now. I can’t walk 5 feet without stopping to take a picture. These flowers are from last summer’s neighborhood garden in our cul de sac.

$64 © Pam Van Londen 2010, Ke Krci Branicka Prague, 8×8 oil on clayboard
This month’s Virtual Paintout is Czech Republic. This scene was shot by Google in Prague.
Perhaps someday I’ll get to travel there in person.

May 8, 2010 Abstract and Non-objective, Daily Painting | Comments (0) | by Pam Van Londen

$64 © Pam Van Londen 2010, Willamette River 9, 8×8 oil on clayboard
I just hate wasting paint, so I keep painting until the palette is clean. This Willamette River scene was the result of yesterday and today’s palette cleaning.
Rain in the Valley
May 7, 2010 Daily Painting, Landscapes | Comments (0) | by Pam Van Londen

SOLD © Pam Van Londen 2010, Elmira Rain 1, 8×8 oil on clayboard

$64 © Pam Van Londen 2010, Mary’s Peak 7, 8×8 oil on clayboard
Highway 99 in Oregon is my favorite. Every turn brings a new spectacular view of coastal and Cascade mountains, quaint valley farm scenes, and a light show of clouds.
While traveling back from a track meet in Elmira, a friend captured this rain storm.

$64 © Pam Van Londen 2010, Portland Rose Festival Float, 8×8 oil on clayboard
Years ago I photographed some water floats waiting for a Portland Rose Festival race. I’m finally getting around to working on some paintings from the references.
This is a close up of a larger photo offered in the May 2010 Monthly Painting Challenge.

May 6, 2010 Abstract and Non-objective, Daily Painting, Landscapes | Comments (0) | by Pam Van Londen

$64 © Pam Van Londen 2010, Mary’s Peak 6, 8×8 oil on clayboard
This quick sketch of Mary’s Peak outside Corvallis and Philomath uses exaggerated color and the same transparent oil on Claybord technique I’ve been using lately.
Canyon Dreams #20
May 5, 2010 Abstract and Non-objective, Daily Painting, Landscapes | Comments (0) | by Pam Van Londen

SOLD © Pam Van Londen 2010, Canyon Dreams 20, 8×8 oil on clayboard
I started this painting before last weekend’s Art Walk, worked on it while I had an audience milling around, then finished it today.
The layered colors are mostly transparent, so there is an etherial feel to the image.
This item is featured in an Etsy Treasury.
Independence Park

Lonely AZ highways
April 28, 2010 Abstract and Non-objective, Daily Painting, Landscapes | Comments (0) | by Pam Van Londen

SOLD © Pam Van Londen 2010, Arizona Highway 1, 8×8 oil on clayboard

$64 © Pam Van Londen 2010, Arizona Highway 2, 8×8 oil on clayboard
I’ve been staring at the reference photo for these two images for 4 years! I love the composition and loneliness of the photo. The mood is different when painted.
I’m sure I’ll paint more of it.
I’m using scraffito with these two as well as the works from earlier this week.
Campus Garden 2
April 25, 2010 Abstract and Non-objective, Daily Painting, Landscapes | Comments (0) | by Pam Van Londen

$64 © Pam Van Londen 2010, Campus Garden 2, 8×8 oil on clayboard
My favorite garden on the way to work is behind the Cafe Yumm.
The hedges are trimmed regularly so they are round and the aspens are lined up in a row. The concrete wall is pointed at an angle, so the whole scene is whimsical.
Each season brings new colors and lighting to enjoy on my quick jaunt.
More canyons

SOLD © Pam Van Londen 2010, Canyon Dreams 19, 8×8 oil on clayboard. See it in the Dad Etsy Treasury.
This 19th Canyon Dream painting is of Georgia O’Keefe’s mountain in New Mexico, called The Pedernal. This view is from the campground between Ghost Ranch and Abiquiu.
Canyon Dreams repeats

$64 © Pam Van Londen 2010, Canyon Dreams 16, 8×8 oil on clayboard

$64 © Pam Van Londen 2010, Canyon Dreams 17, 8×8 oil on clayboard
I sold three Canyon Dream paintings this week, so am eager to repaint some of them.
They never look the same twice; I’m just not that kind of artist.
Canyon Dreams 15
April 21, 2010 Daily Painting, Landscapes | Comments (0) | by Pam Van Londen

$64 © Pam Van Londen 2010, Canyon Dreams 15, 8×8 oil on clayboard
This scene was painted a few months ago on an alizarin crimson underpainting. Today’s version uses pthalo green underpainting, in two shades.
The watercolory transparent effect comes from using thinned, overlapping color.
Canyon Dreams 14
April 21, 2010 Abstract and Non-objective, Daily Painting, Landscapes | Comments (0) | by Pam Van Londen

$64 © Pam Van Londen 2010, Canyon Dreams 14, 8×8 oil on clayboard
This piece depicts the majesty of canyon walls towering above a swift running river. The walls are eroded smooth by wind, rain, and time.
Nest of Prosperity
April 18, 2010 Birds & Animals, Daily Painting | Comments (0) | by Pam Van Londen

SOLD © Pam Van Londen 2010, Nest of Prosperity 2, 8×8 oil on clayboard
Green is the color of money (in this country, anyway) and reflects Mother Earth’s abundance. A nest of eggs symbolizes prosperity; something many of us need during this trying time.
This work uses transparent oil paint on a clay panel with a bit of scraffito.
Crows on the Beach 7
April 16, 2010 Birds & Animals, Daily Painting, Landscapes | Comments (0) | by Pam Van Londen

$64 © Pam Van Londen 2010, Crows at the Beach 7, 8×8 oil on clayboard
I’ve sold the other two of this composition, so felt compelled to paint it again.
I find painting ripples a challenge to render and they are quite different every time I do them.
When painted on Claybord, it is tougher to get smaller ripples. I’ll try it again on Gessobord to accomplish that.
Valley Morning Clouds
April 16, 2010 Daily Painting, Landscapes | Comments (0) | by Pam Van Londen

$64 © Pam Van Londen 2010, Valley Morning 5 clouds, 8×8 oil on clayboard
Ah, it was a plein air day! Painting outside in perfect weather is invigorating and inspiring. It gives you a chance to look up at the sky and contemplate the clouds.
Artists often have their heads in the clouds; they are studying the shape and colors.
Preparing for summer flowers
April 15, 2010 Abstract and Non-objective, Daily Painting, Still Life | Comments (0) | by Pam Van Londen

$64 © Pam Van Londen 2010, Hollyhocks 1, 8×8 oil on claybord
Hollyhocks are one of my favorite flowers. They are found in the south leaning against stucco homes and wooden fences.
We have them here, too, but they are often double-headed and less delicate.
When the sun shines through the petals the color is quite bright.
