These paintings are about the struggle to maintain a balance. How does one be economical yet spontaneous, light-hearted but firm, decisive but flexible, or imaginative but contained?

The paints here are acrylic applied with flat brushstrokes and squirted raised paint, which adds dimension and texture to the pieces.

Due to some technical glitches, I am repainting this series. I’m experimenting with thick, squirted paint and a funny brush made of several rubber tips.

Check back next week for the final work. The paints are quite thick and take a long time to dry.

I’m thinking in threes lately, and in abstract images. Here is an abstracted image of a smallish wave lapping against the sand at the Oregon Coast. Color and brushstrokes are exaggerated on purpose!

I’m showing one of them here, to give you an idea. When they dry, I’ll get a better shot of the three together in frames.

I’m learning to use a palette knife. It certainly takes practice to control it, like any other tool does.

The bird was done with a palette knife and a bit of brushwork and the abstract done with a palette knife and a bit of pencil.

I enjoy the texture. We’ll see how soon I can ship these; it’ll take at least a week to dry.

The crows are fun to paint but I like the challenge of painting the water in various colors and shapes.

Here is another painting from Lucy’s garden, down the street from me. Lucy has passed away, but her memory lives on her her succulent/palm garden, which I get to watch grow every day.

This cactus blooms every spring, in these bright orange blossoms. When they drop off, red bulbs are left, which I think eventually turn into new branches.

Third in a series of paintings of birds, mainly crows. The shape of a crow is distinctive and expressive.

Nicola Clayton, from the departments of animal behavior and experimental psychology at Cambridge University, England has studied their intelligence and believes they are as smart as non-human primates.

Mindless goofing off can yield some interesting results. I started with a multi-colored background and when it dried, I added tints of the original colors then wrote in it with a rubber-tipped scraper.

This quick oil stick sketch has a bit of scraffito.

When I’m waiting for Maya to get out of rehearsal, I often paint in the car/RV with iridescent oil sticks, which have little fumes and make little mess. The results are a rough-looking composition with a shimmer.

Birds provide endless entertainment at the beach. We saw more crows than gulls in Taft this summer.

Trying to capture them in flight is tricky. I almost missed this one.

I’m painting on gessobord instead of claybord for the next month to see if I like it better. Since the paint does not soak in so readily as it does on the clay, I have to be patient for the paint to dry more before working on top of other paint. You know how impatient I can be…we’ll see if I don’t switch back to clay.

Thank you to Kelly J Callahan for highlighting my work in her Obsessions of a Renaissance Women site and to J August Gerlach of Deep Time Threshold Art Movement (DTTAM) for showing my work.

Sometimes I take photos of paintings as I’m painting them. See how three paintings looked at each major step.

If you are like me, you like to watch others paint. I will eventually have a video of me painting from beginning to end with time-lapse or perhaps narration. That seems like a big job but might be fun one day.

These two kids enjoyed skimming the waves two summers ago. I guess I’m feeling a bit sad that summer is over again. We do have such great adventures then.

Painting a wonderful memory helps it last. Consider commissioning a painting of your favorite memory. An original painting can stay in the family through many generations, adding to the family history and leaving an impression for your descendants to enjoy.

Even though Corvallis is not in the tropics, we sometimes can grow tropical flowers like Hibiscus. Makes me feel like I’m on an island.

I’ve mentioned before how difficult it is for me to paint flowers and have them look delicate and relaxed like they are. I’ll be practicing a lot this season to meet that goal.

I visited the Mod Pod store earlier this week to hang some of my daily paintings and was inspired by the trendy-retro-FUN atmosphere of the place.

That experience combined with this image I saw behind my eyelids when I shut them after looking at something too long, resulted in this playful non-objective painting on canvas.

See it in person at the Mod Pod.

Triptych abstract inspired by the pumpkin patch

These three panels were inspired by the bright colors at the pumpkin patch we visited in November of 2008. Purple rain boots against the orange pumpkins, the bright yellow-green apple tree leaves, and the blue shadows made some colorful images.

Purchase these individually or all three to hang a triptych in your living room or office. They are featured at  ModPod, Modern Fun Furnishings, on Second Street in Corvallis, Oregon.
