Every August, the Corvallis Art Guild members gather on the Courthouse lawn to sell paintings to the public during the Clothesline Sale of Art. I had the privilege of meeting Katy Grant Hanson, an oil painter who wrote A Painter’s View: Lewis and Clark in Western Oregon and Washington. Her book inspired me to finally visit the falls along the historic Columbia Gorge Highway.

I had hiked around Multnomah Falls, a famous and picturesque destination on several occasions, but never the other falls.

So for two days in August, I traveled the Historic Columbia River Highway from Troutdale. We visited 5 falls; many of which are not visible from the road.

We stopped at the Women’s Forum to view Crown Point’s Vista House. Then stopped at each falls along the way: Latourell, Bridal Veil, Horsetail, Wakeenha, and Oneonta. These falls are equally spectacular compared to Multnomah Falls.

This en plain air painting of Oneonta falls was done while sitting on the edge of the cliff by the bridge beside the trail. I had to sit very still and place my supplies just so next to me to avoid slipping into the water far below.

Was it worth it? Yes!
