Inspired by the Greek Goddess of War Bellona, the Goddess of Liberty personifies responsibility, obligation, and opportunity, and thus illuminates the path to liberty. In Francois Rude’s energetic sculpture, she brandishes her sword, yelling encouragement to soldiers of the French Revolution as they fight for freedom.
As the guiding goddess of France, the Goddess of Liberty provided inspiration for the Statue of Liberty, France’s gift to the newly formed United States.
